HR Legislation Update 2026: Managing Risk and Compliance in the Japanese Workplace

Last night, IBA Japan was pleased to welcome Ms. 大皷Taiko利枝Rie, Partner at TMI Associates, and Dr. Tobias Schiebe of ARQIS Foreign Law Office for an executive briefing on recent HR legislation developments in Japan.

The session brought together HR professionals and legal leaders from our member firms, providing a valuable forum for discussion on Japan’s rapidly evolving labour law landscape. Topics covered included the 2025 amendments to the Childcare and Family Care Leave Act, overtime compliance, freelancer engagement, and an outlook on key legislative changes ahead in 2026, including expanded gender pay gap reporting obligations and the forthcoming Customer Harassment Law effective October 2026..

In addition to offering a comprehensive overview of recent and upcoming regulatory changes, the session enabled an open and constructive exchange. Participants actively engaged with the speakers, raising practical questions and sharing perspectives on the implications for their organisations.

Our thanks to both speakers for a highly relevant and insightful session. We look forward to continuing these important conversations with our members.
