Fraud is the silent assassin of the commercial world. When times are good and money plentiful, fraud very often goes unspotted.  But when times are bad, and money is short, the discovery of a major fraud can mean loss of reputation, civil and criminal litigation as well as regulatory risk and in extreme cases, insolvency. Too many times, the trail leads back to one of the defrauded company's own employees.

For over six years, Mr. Roughton has been helping financial institutions in Japan manage the consequences of fraud. Currently involved in litigating fraudulent claims worth over US$1 billion, Mr. Roughton has recently been interviewed by The Times of London and the BBC World Service on the warning signs of a fraud and how to deal with the consequences – before it is too late.

General Managers, in-house lawyers, compliance officers and even HR professionals should hear from one of the leading foreign disputes lawyers in Tokyo on how to spot fraud and what to do when a fraud is discovered to maximize financial recovery and to minimize reputational and legal and regulatory risk. In this session, Mr. Roughton will specifically address:

  • the warning signs of a major fraud and crisis management on discovery of a major fraud;
  • how to maximize recovery of embezzled assets and money;
  • what to do if the fraudster is an employee; and
  • steps to prevent fraud.
