Swindles and scams abound during economic downturns. If history is any indication, the current recession will see a resurgence of the very same types of fraud that stung investors in the past, along with some new variations. In this presentation Mr. Witchell will discuss commodity schemes, high-yield investment programs, and simple “cooking the books”.

Mr. Witchell will outline the actions required to identify and mitigate risk effectively and to strengthen corporate governance frameworks. Drawing on recent case studies from Japan and around Asia, he will provide:

  • a description of the main types of fraud and their causes;
  • an overview of best practices in risk management; and
  • strategies to prevent and deal with fraud (due diligence, internal controls, computer forensics, etc.).

Mr. Witchell has over twenty years of experience conducting sensitive investigations in the Asian region and the former Soviet Bloc including 17 years as a diplomat in the British Government's Foreign and Commonwealth Office. He has been in Japan for over 10 years, including five years with the British Embassy in Tokyo. At International Risk, he is responsible for managing investigative, business intelligence and risk mitigation consulting assignments in the Asian region, and globally. He last addressed the IBA on business risks in Japan in September 2005.
