The IBA was very pleased to welcome Mr. Masaaki Shirakawa, Governor of the Bank of Japan, to give his first speech as Governor to 120 people from IBA member firms on January 27, 2009 at the Hotel Okura. The Governor discussed recent economic and financial market developments in Japan and abroad.


Governor Shirakawa graduated from the University of Tokyo with a B.A. in Economics. He also has an M.A. in Economics from the University of Chicago. In 1972 he joined the BOJ, where he held progressively senior roles, including the position of Executive Director from 2002. In 2006 he became a Professor at the Kyoto University School of Government Affairs. In April 2008 he was appointed the 30th Governor of the Bank of Japan.
