BSC GMs Meeting and Reception 2008

The IBA’s Banking Sector Committee held its third “General Managers’ Meeting and Reception” on February 21 at Standard Chartered Bank’s Priority Banking branch in Marunouchi. 40 people including 24 GMs attended the meeting which featured a keynote address by Mr. Ryozo Himino, Director of the Banks Division I of the FSA’s Supervisory Bureau. Mr. Himino discussed the gap in profitability of Japanese banks compared to their international peers, and raised ten hypotheses as to why this may be the case. A lively question and answer session followed.

After the speech, 75 people attended a reception for GMs as well as other senior IBA member bankers, and senior officials from the FSA, BOJ, METI and SESC.

The opportunity for IBA member bankers and senior government officials to speak directly to one another in such an environment proved extremely constructive and was a positive step towards attaining the IBA and FSA’s goal of improving dialogue.
