Managing Stress, Depression, and Mental Health in the Workplace

Most employers are aware of the effects of workplace mental health on productivity, risk management, and employee retention. Coupled with growing expectations for ensuring employee well-being, it is a topic of growing importance for many HR managers. Mr. Takashi Watanabe, a specialist in workplace mental health and stress, discussed how to best manage mental health in a company. His discussion touched upon:
· Common triggers for stress and depression
· How to recognize the warning signs
· Steps that HR managers can proactively take to mitigate long-
lasting negative effects
Mr. Watanabe is President of Life Balance Management, a consultancy specializing in assisting corporations manage mental health issues in their workforce. He was educated at Waseda and the School of Industrial and Labor Relations at Cornell before earning an MBA from the Kellogg School at Northwestern University. His has held senior positions at several US firms, including Mobil, PepsiCo., and Cisco Systems Japan. A certified mental health advisor and industrial counselor, he currently serves as chairman of the METI-accredited Industrial Health Consortium. Mr. Watanabe is also a professor at Northwestern Polytechnical Univ. in Xi’an, China, and regularly lectures at Waseda. He is the author of several books on mental health topics and regularly appears on television media programs focusing on workplace mental health.
