LEADERSHIP COMMUNICATION
(This presentation was conducted in English.)
Presenter: Mr. Robert Burnside, President, Empowr Company Ltd.
The IBA was pleased to introduce to members a leading trainer and coach in leadership communication.
In many situations, the ‘business presentation' is the preferred form of communication. The opportunity to get the undivided attention of an audience for 30 or 60 minutes is often the result of substantial marketing, IR or PR efforts. And yet, how many people can optimise that opportunity? How many can differentiate their message from the hundreds that the audience hear every day? Often the big opportunity—the presentation—turns out to be the weakest link in the communication chain of events. Robert Burnside explored why some people can present well, and many cannot, and what you can do to improve your own persuasiveness and that of your staff. He explained in his presentation:
• Why presentation is so important in external and internal communication;
• Why simple ‘presentation skills' are not the answer—that presentation is a leadership activity and should be approached from that viewpoint at any level, and that skills are then easily acquired;
• Natural and cultural expectations and attitudes, and how they differ for speaker and audience;
• The importance of nonverbal communication, especially in cross-cultural or cross-language situations;
• The power of emotion, the futility of saying too much, why and how to use visual aids… and much more.
This presentation was for those who wanted to develop assertive and convincing communication habits, in themselves or their staff. It was especially useful for those in situations where either the speaker or the audience is working in a foreign language.
