The Role of HR in the Post-Merger Integration Process
Guest Speaker:
Mr. Osamu Narita, Managing Director, HR Solutions
(This presentation was conducted in Japanese)
Mr. Osamu Narita, a leading HR and Organizational Development strategic consultant, drawing upon his extensive first-hand experience of mergers, outlined the vital role that an interim manager can play in the post-merger integration (PMI) process. A management team that experiences human resource difficulties during the PMI process may end up with an organization burdened by unproductive operations and heavy costs. Although circumstances differ by organization, industry, and by situation, Mr. Narita highlighted the numerous commonalities that exist in the underlying strategic process, and also:
• Showed a standard framework of the PMI process that members can refer to if they are suddenly involved in such a case in the future.
• Provided views on change management in general, as a PMI is an extreme change/revolution case.
• Used case studies from his own experiences to discuss the "Interim Management" concept.
Osamu Narita has held senior positions in several multinationals in Japan, including Mobil, American Express and Citibank. He is well versed in western and Japanese practices and methodologies in aligning the HR function to the change needs of organizations. Mr. Narita was Chairman of Inchcape Dodwell Group in and was Senior Vice President of AstraZeneca, leading their post merger integration process. He is a graduate of Waseda University and Cornell University's Management Program. Appointed a member of the Japanese delegation to the ILO in 1979/80. He lectures at Waseda Business School and at management forums throughout Asia. He has published several articles and has translated numerous books on HR issues.
