AN OUTLOOK OF THE BANKING INDUSTRY IN JAPAN AND CHINA

The IBA was pleased to invite back one of Japan’s most influential and innovative bankers.

Guest Speaker: Mr. Masamoto Yashiro, Chairman of the Board, Shinsei Bank

(This presentation was conducted in English.)

Shinsei Bank was successfully transformed from a traditional long-term credit bank to a modern financial services group that is now well positioned to compete effectively and grow in a large and lucrative market. Mr. Yashiro served as this leading catalyst for change by cleaning up the bank’s balance sheets, introducing transparent and sound management practices and providing customers with market-leading products and services to achieve stable, long-term growth. Drawing on his experience at both Shinsei Bank and Citibank, Mr. Yashiro shared his thoughts on the role that foreign financial institutions can play in Japan and on the evolution of Japan’s financial services market.

Mr. Yashiro served as Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Shinsei Bank from March 2000 to June 2005.  Prior to joining Shinsei, Mr. Yashiro was affiliated with Citicorp from November 1989, acting as Country Corporate Office for Japan until September 1997, and then as Chairman of Citicorp Japan until September 1999.  Immediately prior to joining Citicorp, he was affiliated with Exxon (1958-1989).  The positions he held at Exxon included President of Esso Sekiyu K.K. and Executive Vice President of Esso Eastern (Exxon’s Asia and Pacific Region).

Mr. Yashiro is an Independent Director of China Construction Bank and a Member of the International Council of Advisors to the China Banking Regulatory Commission.

This event was open to all staff of IBA members.
