JAPANESE RED CROSS OVERVIEW

This presentation was conducted in Japanese

with consecutive English interpretation.

Guest Speaker:  Mr. Hideki Katsumura, Director General, Disaster Relief and Social Welfare Department, The Japanese Red Cross

The government has predicted that thousands of fatalities and injuries will occur if a major earthquake strikes the Japanese capital. Amidst the downtown core of collapsed buildings and houses, millions of people will require emergency medical treatment, clothing, food and water. As an anchor for this discussion, an official from the Japanese Red Cross Society provided a practical and educative overview of the organization's contingency, preparatory and coordination efforts to handle this crisis.

Lessons learned from the 1995 Kobe earthquake, the Niigata Chuetsu earthquake in October 2004 and the Fukuoka earthquake in March 2005 reinforces the need for building a better emergency network to provide humanitarian assistance to both the Japanese and foreign communities in Tokyo. As this meeting focused on the “human aspect” concerns, both BCP and HR managers attended this session to better educate themselves about the possible impact of disasters on staff.

This meeting is a joint event between the IBA's BCP-DR-IT Security and Personnel Information Forums.
