BCP UPDATE ON THE FINANCIAL INDUSTRY HERE AND ABROAD

Dr. Kenji Watanabe, Associate Professor, Management Information Systems and Engineering, Nagaoka University of Technology
A leading academic and BCP expert highlighted the following BCP issues for IBA members:
• The increasing dependency on Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and emerging vulnerabilities for the financial industry;
• The Japanese regulatory authorities' concerns and their explicit/implicit guidelines;
• Gap analysis against the US and UK financial industry efforts;
• Governmental requirements for the financial industry as one of its critical infrastructures;
• Latest updates on the international standardization for business continuity at ISO; and
• A proposal to create sound business continuity practices in the Japanese financial industry.
Since 2003, Dr. Watanabe has been both an Associate Professor at the Nagaoka University of Technology and an Advisor in Financial Services at Chuo-Aoyama Audit Corporation (PricewaterhouseCoopers). Previous to that, he worked for IBM Business Consulting Services in a variety of roles in the areas of financial services and consulting. Before IBM, he held different posts at The Fuji Bank, Ltd., in foreign exchange, information systems development and business promotion. In addition, Dr. Watanabe has sat on various committees including the Business Continuity Committee of the Central Disaster Management Council (Cabinet Office), the Critical Information Infrastructure Protection Committee (National Information Security Center, Japan Cabinet Secretariat), the Systems Auditing Group of the Financial Information Systems Center (FISC) and many others. He has a Ph.D. in Engineering (Production and Information Systems) from Waseda University, an MBA from the Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas and a B.S. in Forestry from Kyoto University.
